House 1 – Personality and Path

Surely you have already heard about the “Ascendant” sign. But do you know what it means?

In Ancient Greece, the word horoskopos meant “Ascendant”, which is the great hand of the time clock, the marker of time. It marks the beginning of House 1 – the House of Self.

The Ascendant, like the planets’ positions in the Houses, is a factor which is highly dependent on the exactitude of the time of birth. It is the most individual point of an astrological map, and therefore, the most special one, just as our digital fingerprint.

The Ascendant is the line that initiates and synthetizes House 1.

So, what will the Ascending reveal?

The Ascendant is the title of the great movie of our lives. It is the fundamental energy that characterizes our birth experience, our personality, as well as the main role we come to discover and perform.

Those who know their role well will easily feel a star. They will feel more fulfilled and happy, for they live with a bigger and profounder sense. Like an actor who stops being an extra to become the main star, the headliner.

But how exactly is the Ascendant connected with the Houses?

The 12 Houses are the 12 main rooms of the astrological map. For instance, House 6 will be our “study”, House 8 can be the “couple’s bedroom”, House 11 can be the “dining room”, among others.

House 1 represents our house as a whole and its exterior appearance. The planets positioned in it will be of great importance in our personal fulfilment.

The Ascendant is the beginning point of House 1 and, in that sense, it is the main Gate that defines us in our relationship with others. It is very much associated to our physical image – body, face, look – as it is the more visible side to the exterior. It is also connected to our birth and first childhood, since they match the arrival on life.

In a first phase of conscience, we only experience the physical attributes associated to our Ascendant and to the planets positioned at House 1. We appear the same, but we are not.

As we grow up, we also start feeling and thinking as those energies. We appear to be the same and we are.

Ascendants of the Fire Element (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) will have, on average, a more outgoing and imposing presence. They will face challenges of true independence, courage, pride and faith throughout their lives.

Ascendants of the Water Element (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) will normally be more shy and susceptible people. They will be challenged to achieve a true sense of intimacy and emotional sharing over time.

Ascendants of the Air Element (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) will tend to be more modern and communicative individuals. With maturity, they will be more and more sociable, adaptable and friendly people.

Ascendants of the Earth Element (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) will be reliable and discrete people. Life will challenge them to be really productive, working and organized individuals.

Totally assuming the archetype of our Ascendant and its planetary configurations at House 1 will make it easier to live the plenitude of the several planes: loving, personal or professional.

In short, any star positioned in House 1 – the House of Self or individuality – will have the same immense weight on our path, nature, relationship with the body and path of personal affirmation.

If the Moon is on House 1, the individual will be challenged to assume one´s sensibility, “motherhood”, family sense and some emotional dependency (from oneself or others from one) to find oneself in life.

As a general rule, one will be more like one´s mother, with a few insecurities and hesitant at first, but an intuitive person concerned with one´s appearance. There is a need and constant search for one’s self, since the inborn impulse is to live in function of others.

If Mercury is present here, the sense of intelligence, friendship, rationality, work and communication will be essential characteristics to be developed during life, as well as the versatility of roles and functions.

Those who have Venus in the House of Self will have as their purpose of conscience to live their affective, conjugal, loving and kind side. They tend to have a beautiful face or body, to which they take even more care of.

If you have the Sun in this house, you should learn to have more conscience of yourself, of your body, of your autonomy and personality strength.

You will be confronted to be more and more autonomous, confident, happy, expressive and maker of your own destiny. There will be more similarities with the Father in terms of appearance or nature.

If Mars is positioned here, you will experience life as a struggle and constant conquest since birth. The relationship with the body will not be easy in a first stage of life, but you will feel more like a strong, sincere and energetic person over time.

With Jupiter, your purpose of self-conscience will be happiness, culture, travelling and a sense of faith that also inspires others. The challenge will also be to feel free and with principles of social or spiritual help.

Saturn in House 1 represents a great crusade of self-acceptance and autonomy. Though some hesitancy may occur when making decisions, a certain antipathy or arrogance (due to fears of rejection) at first, you should become a more and more self-assured, stable, professional and ambitious person over time.

In case you were born just before sunrise (up to two hours before), approximately between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., depending on the time of year and country, you will have the Sun positioned in House 1.

In that sense, this House will have a very special meaning in your life and you are supposed to learn how to become king or queen of your fate, living with enormous joy, simplicity and pride, as a stage star.

To fulfil this “design”, look yourself in the mirror every day, admire yourself, enjoy your image, take care of your body and recognize that you are a God or a Goddess on Earth. Do not take too long for others to make decisions, because you are a free and independent person without many worries.

Example of famous personalities with the Sun in House 1: Grace Kelly; Brad Pitt; Cicciolina; among others.

This House is equally important if there is more than one planet positioned in it. To verify this, and in case you do not have your map yet, please refer to the annex at the end of the book (download the book here).

House 1 one has a natural affinity with Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac.
